Who Can Visit?

First, the most critical rule: Only Indian Nationals are permitted to visit Nathula Pass.

Note for International Travelers: Foreign nationals can travel up to Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake) and Baba Mandir, but the pass itself is restricted area.

When Can You Go?

Nathula Pass is not open every day. Plan your itinerary around these operational days:

  • Wednesday
  • Thursday
  • Saturday
  • Sunday

What Documents Do You Need?

Strict security means your paperwork must be flawless. Ensure you carry:

  • Valid Photo ID: Voter ID, Passport, or Driving License. (Aadhaar is often accepted but carry a backup).
  • Photographs: Two passport-sized photos per person.
  • For Kids: School ID or Birth Certificate.

How to Apply: The Step-by-Step Process

1. Reach Gangtok

Permits are issued by the Tourism Department in Gangtok. This will be your base camp.

2. Find a Registered Agency

You cannot effectively apply as an individual. You must go through a registered travel agency or tour operator in Gangtok.

3. Submit by Lunchtime

Submit your ID proofs and photos to your agent at least one day in advance, preferably before 2:00 PM. Same-day permits are virtually impossible.

4. Collect & Go

Your driver or agent will handle the collection of the Protected Area Permit (PAP). It will be handed over on the morning of your journey.
